Repair Options for Concrete Pool Decks

concrete pool deck

Concrete pool decks are prone to damage because it is exposed to a variety of factors that could affect it significantly, such as the freezing and thawing of ice, weather changes, sunlight, and pool chemicals. As a result, swimming pool decks could begin to crack, scale, or spall. Investigate and find out what exactly is causing all that damage in order to determine the appropriate repair needed.

When any damage starts to appear on your pool deck, it is important to address it as soon as possible before it gets worse. Keep in mind that worse damage would call for a more costly pool deck repair. Professional contractors would know repair processes in detail but just to give you an idea, here are some of the most common repair options for decks:

Pool Deck Refinishing

This repair process is ideal for surfaces that only require minimal repairs. So, major cracks and deep spalling damage is out of the picture. A refinishing is often done on pool deck coating, sealer, or stain that has faded. If you notice that your floor looks way duller than it used to, and 2 to 3 years have already passed since it was last coated, then a reapplication or “touch-up” is necessary. The process would just usually involve a pressure wash and then a resealing or recoloring. When all is dry, the pool deck can already be walked on furniture can be reinstalled.

Pool Deck Resurfacing

In contrast to a refinish, resurfacing is used on pool decks with more extensive damage like cracks and pits. This deal with the entire surface completely, not just the coating or sealer, by grinding the surface of existing concrete to eliminate any hairline cracks or installing an overlay or micro topping for which the contractor could work on.

Prepping for a Resurfacing

Before a thin layer of concrete can be installed on top of the damaged one, it has to be prepped in a way that damages would be addressed first to keep them from reoccurring. Here are the most common preparations done on surfaces that require an overlay:

1.Epoxy filler

Epoxy is one of the most highly recommended fillers for cracks that are small enough to be sewn back together with an adhesive. The crack is cleaned of any debris or loose cement before the filler is applied. This is to ensure optimum adhesion. When all cracks have been filled in, a new layer can now be poured and the desired design can be applied.

2. Concrete engraving

For cracks that are smaller than 1/8 of an inch wide, custom scoreline can be done to add character and design on the pool deck’s surface. If you want a more customized and pronounced design, like a logo or pattern, a concrete engraving is highly advisable. The lines that are cut or engraved are intentionally done on where the cracks are. This way, the gaps are masked while a new design is incorporated on the concrete surface, thus, providing a whole new resurfaced look.
